About of shuamta.ge : The website describes the New Shuamta Monastery of Khulo, dedicated to the Mother of God. It was founded in the 16th century by Queen Tinatin, wife of King Levan Kakheti. The monastery held a prominent place among churches dedicated to the Mother of God in Kakheti due to the significance of the Khulo icon. It was closed by the Bolshevik government in 1926 and repurposed as a rest home, later a children's home during WWII. Plans for a tourist base were made in the 1980s. In 1990, the monastery was returned to the Georgian Church, and in 1995, a female monastery was re-established there.
